The first vines were brought to Australia by immigrants in the late 18th century. In the middle of the following century, wine growing began to focus on the southernmost parts of the country, especially South Australia, where the climate was most favourable and the vines were not troubled by leaf louse. Australia’s wine production and export grew at a tremendous pace in the late 20th century. The area given over to wine growing now stands at 150,000 hectares and there are major wine centres not only in South Australia but also in neighbouring Victoria and New South Wales to the east. Australia is the world’s fourth biggest exporter of wine. The largest markets are Britain and the United States, but wines are exported to over 100 countries in all.

Australian wines are like the Australians themselves; friendly, easy to approach, and honest. The wine production is innovative and high-tech. Most consumers like the typical Australian red wines; the baked and full-bodied Shiraz wines and such soft, two-grape blends as Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot. The most popular white wines include Chardonnay, Semillon and Riesling.
